Van Gisbergen's Charlotte roval dominance, by the numbers

NASCAR Cup Series drivers were treated to another Shane van Gisbergen road course invitational on Sunday on the Charlotte Roval.

Van Gisbergen led a race-high 57 of 109 laps and picked up his fifth win of the season. But it was his fifth-straight on a road course, which made him just the second driver in Cup Series history to win five straight road course races. The Trackhouse Racing driver is now alongside four-time NASCAR champion and Hall of Fame member Jeff Gordon in that category.

“I never care about that stuff, to be honest," van Gisbergen said. "It might be a weird thing to say, but yeah, I just try and do my best. When I retire, I guess I’ll look at that stuff and be pretty stoked, but at the moment I just want to keep doing the best I can and try and add to that stuff.

The dominance van Gisbergen showed this season in the road and street course events has been exceptional. Van Gisbergen and the No. 88 Trackhouse Racing team won five of the six road course races, with the outlier being a sixth-place finish at Circuit of the Americas that was won by Christopher Bell. In all, van Gisbergen had a 1.8 average finish on the road courses.

Here are the other numbers:

·      Van Gisbergen became the first driver to win his first six Cup Series races on road courses

·      Van Gisbergen led 301 laps of the 579 total laps of the road course races

·      Van Gisbergen won four of the 12 total road course stages

·      Van Gisbergen won three of five road course races by a margin of victory larger than 11 seconds: Mexico: 16.56s; Watkins Glen: 11.11s; Charlotte: 15.16s

·      Van Gisbergen became the third driver to win both a stage and the race at the Charlotte Roval, behind Ryan Blaney (2018) and Chase Elliott (2019)

Charlotte was the final road or street course race of the season.
