Sanna named head of motorsport for McLaren Automotive

McLaren Automotive has announced that Giorgio Sanna has become its new head of motorsport.

In his new role, the Italian, who previously served as the racing boss at Automobili-Lamborghini, will oversee all of McLaren Automotive's sporting programs, including its GT3, GT4 and Trophy activities. He will report to Jonathan Simms, the director of McLaren Special Operations & Motorsport.

Prior to his nine-year stint at the top end of Lamborghini's race programs, which ended with a surprise resignation in March 2024, Sanna was a title winner in Italian GT and the Asian Le Mans Series.

His appointment at McLaren Automotive follows Ian James' departure over the summer to take up the role of team principal of Jaguar's Formula E team.

“Giorgio Sanna’s appointment as our new Head of Motorsport further strengthens a division of McLaren Automotive that is integral to our brand DNA," Simms said. "Maintaining a strong and enduring connection to our racing heritage firmly aligns us with our most passionate and committed clients, and securing a recognized leader in the GT racing arena to lead McLaren Motorsport signals our determination to drive growth in this area."
