Robinson steps away from full-time racing
Two-time IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar champion Gar Robinson has announced that he will step away from full-time sports car racing to pursue new endeavors in motorsport.
"I'm announcing today that I am taking a step back from full-time sports car racing," Robinson said in a video post to his social media channels. "This is not a retirement, this is not a goodbye. I'm not going anywhere; I don't have anything wrong with me. I'm just taking a step back.
"Over the past six years, endurance sports car racing has been one of the most incredible, epic, awesome, wonderful adventures in my life that I think I could ever have. We've had some incredible races with some of the top teams, on some of the top stages, in one of the top series in the world. I've had some incredible teammates, crew members, and an incredible team behind me supporting me throughout the way.
Robinson, the son of long-time IMSA and Trans Am owner/driver George Robinson, won the 2021 and 2023 IMSA LMP3 championships as the Bronze driver at Riley Motorsports, a relationship that continued as he and Riley moved up to LMP2 in 2024.
Before turning 30 in January, Robinson won his class in IMSA's four major endurance races – the Rolex 24 At Daytona, Sebring 12 Hours, Watkins Glen 6 and Petit Le Mans. Prior to his IMSA career, Robinson won the 2015 and 2017 SCCA Trans Am TA2 championships.
With his decision to step back from full-time endurance racing, Robinson will devote more time towards off-road racing in North America and Brazil, and restarting the Robinson Racing team which was first founded by his father in 1990.
"There's some new challenges in front of me, like rally and desert racing – and also some personal projects that I have been sitting on for quite a while," he said. "The time away will give me new opportunities, like re-opening Robinson Racing, and growing that into something that I want it to be, and then going after some of the new goals that are on the board in front of us. I look forward to the adventures in places like out West, and down in Brazil, and all over the world. And I'm even more excited to be able to share the experience with everyone else."
Robinson and co-driver Felipe Fraga, who each competed in the 1500-kilometer rally in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil back in April, currently sit third in the LMP2 championship standings after five races.
